Title Data broadcasting service patent applications on the rise
Writer Admin Date 2005-04-11 Hits 1504
Since 1999, the total cases have increased 30~40% every year to 1,469 cases, KIPO said.

Patent application for data broadcasting services (which is technology that provides diverse contents to broadcasting programs) is on the rise. This came from the new multimedia environment as a result of conversion of broadcasting and communication technology. There is also an expectation of a growing demand for data broadcasting service through 2-way digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service.

On March 27 the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) stated that the number of publicized patent application for DMB service technology totaled 1,469 from 1999 to 2003. Applications have increased 30 ~ 40% every year on average for the past 5 years. Interestingly, in this field, foreign applicants are showing a relatively high proportion of application rate, 37%, while Koreans account for 63%.

Among the domestic applicants, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Daewoo Electronics and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) are at the top of the list.
Particularly, it was found that LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics are leading the domestic application, making up 40% and 21%, respectively.

The KIPO said that this shows that Koreans are making active investments in R&D for applied transmission protocol technology linking digital broadcasting and data broadcasting and strategic research focusing on development and commercialization of DMB-related products.

Meanwhile, the KIPO is planning to expand its operation of ‘Digital TV Patent Research Center’ to ‘DMB Patent Research Center’. This is to support the commercialization of patented technologies and to prevent patent disputes as it recognizes the need for strategic patent operation and licensing information. It will also prepare for possible patent dispute among businesses as a result of rising applications.
